How pricing works

  • What decides the price

Most small jobs are the hourly rate times the time, plus parts. The time depends on a few things.

    • How far the wire has to travel

    • Open basement or attic, or a finished wall

    • How old the wiring at the box is

    • Whether a permit is required

  • What the quote includes, and what it doesn't

A written price covers the labor, the parts and any permit fee, each on its own line. It leaves out drywall repair, paint and anything the quote names as a separate job.

  • What happens at the visit

I arrive in the window we agreed by text, look at the problem and test before I touch anything. If it is more than an hour or two, I stop and give you the price. You decide whether I go on.

  • Saturdays and after hours

I do not take after-hours calls. Saturday jobs are booked ahead, at a higher Saturday rate, with a two-hour minimum.

  • When you get the number

The menu price is the price for the job as listed, texted to you when you book. A job that runs past the first hour gets a written price before I go on.

A sample written quote

What a quote looks like

This is the shape of the text you get for a job that runs past the first hour. Every line is itemized, with labor, parts and handling each on its own.

  • Two outlets and a fan in a 1990s house

Meridian, an open attic above the room, no permit required for the swaps.

    • Labor, 2.5 hours at the install rate
    • Two outlets and cover plates
    • Fan box rated for a fan, and a bracket
    • Parts handling, a percentage of the parts

An example. Your quote is for your house.

Price questions

Is the visit fee credited to the job?

There is no separate visit fee. The first hour is the minimum, and it is the first hour of the job.

How do I pay?

By card, check or Venmo when the work is done. Nothing is due ahead for a job priced from the menu. A larger written quote says what is due when.

Does the menu price apply to my house?

It is the price for a standard house. A finished wall, a longer wire run or an older box can raise the time, and I say so before I start.

Are parts marked up?

Yes, by a handling markup set out on how I bill, and the receipt shows my cost beside it. You can buy fixtures and fans yourself and I will install them at the same labor price.
